JAKARTA, 11 January 2017 — Recognising ASEAN as an important organisation with an increasingly strategic role in the region and beyond, Serbia conveyed its interest to forge closer relationship with ASEAN and its Member States. This message was conveyed by the new Ambassador of the Republic of Serbia to ASEAN Slobodan Marinković during the presentation of his Letter of Credence to Secretary-General of ASEAN Le Luong Minh, at the ASEAN Secretariat yesterday.

Secretary-General Minh congratulated Ambassador Marinković on his assumption of duty as Serbia’s Ambassador to ASEAN. He updated him on the establishment of the ASEAN Community and the adoption of the ASEAN Community Vision 2025 which includes ASEAN’s aspiration to further advance its relations with external partners. He also informed him on the planned activities to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of ASEAN this year.

Ambassador Marinković updated Secretary-General Minh on the current status of Serbia’s application for membership in the European Union. He also reiterated Serbia’s interest in acceding to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation (TAC) in Southeast Asia. Secretary-General Minh appreciated Serbia’s interest to accede to TAC and encouraged Serbia to enhance its cooperative relations with ASEAN and its Member States. He stated that ASEAN and Serbia could further tap on each other’s potentials to promote substantial cooperation in the economic and socio-cultural fields.
