The 16th ASEAN-Republic of Korea (ROK) Dialogue, a senior officials’ level meeting, was convened here today to discuss ways and means to further strengthen ASEAN-ROK Strategic Partnership.
At the Dialogue, the two sides reviewed progress made in the implementation of the Joint Declaration on ASEAN-ROK Strategic Partnership for Peace and Prosperity and the Plan of Action to implement the Joint Declaration. The Dialogue expressed satisfaction with the significant progress that has been achieved thus far in ASEAN-ROK cooperation. One of the notable achievements was the signing of the Agreement on Forest Cooperation between ASEAN and the ROK on November 2011 in Bali, Indonesia.
In addition, the ROK expressed its strong commitment to support ASEAN’s efforts to narrowing the development gap in the region, particularly the Mekong region under the Mekong-ROK framework.
The Meeting also exchanged views on the future direction of ASEAN-ROK relations, and underscored the need to continue to tap the vast potential and opportunity that exist in the relations to build a strong partnership that could contribute to the peace and prosperity of the region.
The Dialogue had a good exchange of views on regional and international issues of common interests and concern. The ROK also reaffirmed its strong support to ASEAN’s leading role in East Asia cooperation.
The Meeting was co-chaired by H.E. Mr. Alounkeo Kittikhoun, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Lao PDR and H.E. Mr. Kim Kyou-Hyun, Deputy Minister for Political Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade of the ROK.
