The Senior Officials of ASEAN and ROK held their 17th Dialogue in Surabaya on Tuesday, 11 June 2013. They discussed the latest developments in ASEAN and the ROK and the Korean Peninsula, and reviewed the ASEAN-ROK relations and its future direction.

The Meeting was co-chaired by H.E. I Gusti Agung Wesaka Puja, SOM Leader and Director-General for ASEAN Cooperation, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Indonesia and H.E. Lee Kyung-soo, Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the ROK. Indonesia is the current Country Coordinator for ASEAN-ROK Dialogue Relations.

The Meeting discussed further strengthening of ASEAN-ROK cooperation in all areas of its strategic partnership for peace and prosperity covered by the Plan of Action (POA) 2011-2015 including the commitment of ROK to support ASEAN Connectivity. This would include the ROK proposals to convene the ASEAN-ROK Roundtable in 2013 and the ASEAN-ROK Special Summit in 2014.

H.E. Puja said that ASEAN-ROK cooperation has enjoyed robust growth since its launching in 1989, and the implementation of the POA has been running well. He also looked forward to further cooperation between ASEAN and ROK in the regional mechanisms.

“The ASEAN-ROK cooperation would continue to flourish, and we could complement each other in our support to the three pillars of ASEAN community-building,” said H.E. Puja.

The Senior Officials also exchanged views on: a) enhancing regional connectivity; b) regional and international issues; c) developments in the Korean Peninsula; d) global financial and economic situation; d) non-traditional security issues such as food and energy security, and climate change and disaster management; and e) regional architecture.

Both sides agreed to further develop the ASEAN-ROK relations.
