JAKARTA, 9 November 2021 – The 2022 ASEAN Artists Residency Programme has been announced in partnership with Maybank Foundation and Sharjah Art Foundation (SAF).

The special edition of the residency will allow for two Southeast Asian artists to participate in a month-long residency organised and hosted by SAF in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, in January 2022. This will culminate with an exhibition of the final artworks in the ASEAN Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai.

The selection panel included Sheikha Hoor Al Qasimi, President and Director of SAF; Lee Yoong Yoong, Director of Community Affairs at ASEAN and ASEAN Commissioner-General at EXPO 2020 Dubai; Benjamin Milton Hampe, ASEAN Gallery Curator and Project Director of KONNECT ASEAN at ASEAN Foundation; Budhi Dyah Sitawati, Trustee at Maybank Foundation; and Khai Hori, Curatorial Director and Partner at Chan + Hori Contemporary.

They will decide on the two artists based on the strength of their proposals and potential for the residency to impact their careers.

This ASEAN Secretariat-initiated programme offers opportunities for regional artist communities to undertake cultural exchanges. Maybank Foundation will support travel costs and production fees, while SAF will provide living expenses and accommodation, studio and exhibition spaces, public-education programmes, and other promotional activities for the selected resident artists.

According to Lee Yoong Yoong, “the residency programme is designed to explore an ASEAN identity and to deepen mutual understanding across diverse global cultures. The outcome will be a high impact arts and cultural initiative within ASEAN that will contribute meaningfully towards knowledge production in the visual arts.”

The residency programme is co-organised by SAF and Maybank Foundation. Both organisations are renowned internationally for their support of artists and artistic practice.

In years to follow, it is expected that there will be more emerging and potential young artists chosen to represent each of the ten ASEAN Member States. The works they produce during the residency will eventually be featured in the ASEAN Gallery in the Jakarta-based ASEAN Secretariat.

The application period starts from October 23 until November 15. Artists who are interested in applying for the AARP, can visit [LINK]
