Abstract

The report establishes a regional framework for classifying and scaling up 70 NbS practices across Southeast Asia’s diverse landscapes, aligned with the IUCN’s seven societal challenges. The report outlines eight NbS typologies addressing NbS attributes and societal challenges in Southeast Asia context:

1. Ecosystem Restoration and Conservation

2. Sustainable Management of Ecosystems

3. Green Infrastructure in Urban, Industrial and Semi-Rural Areas

4. Climate-Resilient Landscapes and Seascapes

5. Ecosystem-Based Disaster Risk Reduction (Eco-DRR)

6. Nature-Based Agricultural Systems

7. Hybrid Solutions (Nature + Technology)

8. Community-Based NbS

Those NbS typologies provide a practical roadmap to guide policymakers, planners, and communities in implementing context-specific, inclusive, and scalable NbS that strengthen climate resilience, biodiversity, and sustainable development across ASEAN.

Key recommendations from the report include:

  • Tailor NbS to the unique ecological, social, and economic contexts of ASEAN countries to maximise impact and scalability.
  • Integrate NbS into national and regional policies, including ASEAN’s climate and development agendas.
  • Empower local communities to lead and sustain NbS initiatives.
  • Develop robust mechanisms to assess the effectiveness and co-benefits of NbS projects.

Foster cross-border partnerships to address shared challenges and promote knowledge exchange.
