Ambassador of Egypt to ASEAN presents Letter of Credence to Secretary-General of ASEAN

JAKARTA, 20 March 2024 – Ambassador Yasser Hassan Farag Elshemy presented his Letter of Credence as Ambassador of the Arab Republic of Egypt to ASEAN to Secretary-General of ASEAN Dr Kao Kim Hourn at the ASEAN Secretariat.

During the courtesy call following the presentation ceremony of the Letter of Credence, Secretary-General Dr Kao congratulated Ambassador Elshemy on his assumption of office and reiterated the ASEAN Secretariat’s readiness to work closely with Ambassador Elshemy and the Embassy of Egypt in Jakarta to further promote ASEAN-Egypt relations.  

Ambassador Elshemy expressed Egypt’s readiness to work closely with ASEAN to strengthen cooperation between the two sides.  

Secretary-General Dr Kao further encouraged Egypt to explore cooperation with ASEAN in various areas of mutual interest, including capacity building and training programmes, promoting trade and investment, tourism, business-to-business linkage, food security, agriculture and fisheries, climate change and environment, and clean energy. He further encouraged Egypt to advance its engagement with ASEAN, through its important role as well as the founding member of the African Union.

Egypt accredited its first Ambassador to ASEAN in 2011. In 2016, Egypt acceded to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC) which reflects its commitment to promoting peace, stability and cooperation in the region. The ASEAN Committee in Cairo (ACC) was established in 2011 to promote ASEAN’s relations and cooperation with Egypt in the host country.
