Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Sudan to ASEAN, H.E. Ms. Alice Mageza, and the Secretary-General of ASEAN, Dr Surin Pitsuwan, exchanged views on the possible future areas of cooperation between ASEAN and Zimbabwe during H. E. Mageza’s presentation of her Letter of Credence yesterday.
Ambassador Mageza stressed to Dr. Surin of the importance Zimbabwe attaches to its relations with ASEAN and the ASEAN Member States, and the desire of her Government to strengthen relations with ASEAN. H.E. Mageza cited Zimbabwe’s recent developments, including in the Government’s policy on land redistribution, which have impacted economic development and affected its relations with a number of foreign countries. She spoke highly of ASEAN’s achievements made in recent years, both internally and its prominent role in the international affairs in which the world and African countries could draw lessons and experience from.
Dr Surin conveyed his and the ASEAN Secretariat’s readiness to working closely with Ambassador Mageza to further enhancing the relationship between ASEAN and Zimbabwe. The two further discussed activities to increase Zimbabwe’s visibility. This may be carried out in the bilateral framework as well as through regional framework such as Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the African Union, which Zimbabwe is a member.
