Senior Officials from 10 ASEAN countries and China gathered in Beihai City, Guangxi province of China, to prepare for the upcoming 8th China–ASEAN Expo to be held 21-26 October 2011 and the China-ASEAN Business Investment Summit to take place 21-22 October 2011.

According to the Secretary General of The China-ASEAN Expo (CAEXPO) Secretariat, Mr. Zheng Junjian, the last CAEXPO was a great success—reaching total trade volume of US$ 9.8 billion and contractual volume of US$ 41.7 billion. This year, the 8th CAEXPO will play a more active role in promoting the ASEAN-China bilateral cooperation in order to meet the two-way trade target of US$ 500 billion by 2015 set by Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao at the 13th ASEAN-China Summit in 2010.

The 8th CAEXPO’s theme of the year will be “Environment Protection Cooperation.” It will continue to host 5 pavilions, including: Commodity of trade; Investment cooperation; Advanced technology; Trade in services; and Cities of Charm. A series of high-end activities and promotional campaign, including China-ASEAN Friendship Quiz Show and China-ASEAN Media Rally will be organized. In addition, a new event of a Roundtable Meeting on Investment Promotion will take place on the sideline to serve as a G-G platform for policy makers on investment from ASEAN Member States and China to exchange views and information including experiences on their investment regimes.

“Early exchange of list companies attending the CAEXPO should be made between ASEAN Member States and China in order to have a successful business matching sessions,” said Mr. Subash Bose Pillai, Director of Market Integration Directorate at the ASEAN Secretariat.

Vice Governor of Guangxi province, Mr. Chen Wu, reiterated how the CAEXPO serves as a platform to promote trade and investment between ASEAN and China under the framework of ACFTA and has become a hallmark of the growing ASEAN-China economic relations. This year marks the 20th Anniversary of ASEAN-China relations, ASEAN-China Year of Friendly Exchanges and the 1st Anniversary of ACFTA establishment.

Malaysia, as country of honor for this year’s event, reported that they are already 80% ready for the CAEXPO.

The CAEXPO preparatory meeting was Co-Chaired by Mr. Liang Wentao, Deputy Director General of Department of Asian Affairs, Ministry of Trade of China and Mr. Subash; whereas the Senior Officials Meeting on Investment Promotion meeting was Co-Chaired by Madam Zhang Yingxin and Mr. Subash.

The CAEXPO is co-sponsored by the ministries of commerce/trade & industry of China and the 10 ASEAN countries as well as the ASEAN Secretariat and organized by the People’s Government of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region of China. The grand annual international event is held in Nanning, Guangxi, China to promote trade and investment between ASEAN and China.
