The Secretary-General of ASEAN Dr. Surin Pitsuwan and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Germany Dr. Guido Westerwelle Exchanged viewson major aspects of cooperation between ASEAN and Germany within the context of ASEAN-EU cooperation, earlier this week.
In their meeting, the two leaders discussed a variety of issues discussed including: developments in ASEAN, the needs of ASEAN, and future developments in ASEAN-EU relations.
Dr. Surin encouraged Germany to continue engaging with ASEAN, both in national and regional frameworks, through the Friedrich Naumann Foundation. Areas that could be strengthened include among others: people-to-people contacts, media, youth, and human resources development. In response, Minister Westerwelle welcomed the initiative and was of the view that the foundation would be very keen to cooperate with the ASEAN Member States.
Minister Westerwelle took the opportunity to congratulate SG Dr. Surin for his successful duty as Secretary-General of ASEAN and appreciated his concrete efforts for advancing ASEAN cooperation with the EU and Germany in particular.
