“Canada is one of ASEAN`s oldest Dialogue Partners. The investment that flows between ASEAN and Canada represents an important component of the bilateral commercial relationship,” said Dr Surin Pitsuwan, Secretary-General of ASEAN during the First ASEA Economic Ministers (AEM)-Canada Consultations today. The inaugural Consultations took place during the 35th anniversary year of the ASEAN-Canada Dialogue Partnership.

The Ministers welcomed this first ever ministerial-level AEM-Canada Consultations and expressed hope that they would provide the catalyst for expanding ASEAN-Canada commercial relations. The Ministers underscored that, despite the uncertainty in the global economy and the European financial crisis, total trade between ASEAN and Canada continues to be on the upswing with bilateral merchandise trade growing by approximately 10 percent between 2010 and 2011.
