The 3rd Meeting of the ASEAN-China Heads of Intellectual Property Offices today discussed areas of cooperation under the ASEAN-China Work Programme 2012-2013. It also sought to foster dialogue on current developments on intellectual property (IP) in ASEAN and China.

Held on 9-13 July 2012 in Singapore as part of the 38th Meeting of the ASEAN Working Group on Intellectual Property Cooperation (AWGIPC), the meeting focused on a Database on Traditional Chinese Medicines (TCM) as an important area of cooperation. According to Dr. Li Yuguang, Deputy Commissioner, State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO), cooperation between ASEAN and China will likely involve training and capacity-building on the purpose, structure, and development of China’s TCM database, as well as on the methodology used in gathering data for the database. He also expressed SIPO’s willingness to share experiences on patent search and examination such as ‘Cloud Patent Examination Solution’ to enhance the coordination and cooperation among the ASEAN Member States Intellectual Property Offices (AMS-IPOs).

Ms. Pajchima Tanasanti, Chair of the AWGIPC and Director-General, Department of Intellectual Property, Ministry of Commerce, Thailand, underscored the relevance of the Database on TCM. She explained that training and capacity-building on the subject will provide an important opportunity for the AMS-IPOs to further understand TCM database in the context of their own role and responsibilities in patent search and examination.

Mr. Tan Yih San, Chief Executive of the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS), said that Singapore is honored to host this event and delighted that the series of ASEAN-SIPO initiatives will go a long way towards improving the IP competency in ASEAN Member States.

The Meeting expressed appreciation to the IPOS for the hospitality and excellent arrangements.
