ASEAN concluded a series of Good Regulatory Practice (GRP) Workshops, focusing on electric vehicles and battery industries in three pilot Member States of Lao PDR, Malaysia, and Indonesia.
Supported by the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA), the workshop is part of an initiative to pilot the implementation of the GRP in selected strategic sectors. The last milestone in the implementation of the ASEAN Work Plan on Good Regulatory Practice (GRP) 2016-2025, the pilot initiative was built upon ASEAN’s GRP-related initiatives, such as the ASEAN Good Regulatory Practice Core Principles, the baseline study for the Regulatory Management System, as well as the more recent ASEAN Handbook on Good Regulatory Practice.
Electric vehicles and battery industries offers ASEAN opportunities in its efforts to diversify supply chain and adopt green technologies. With transport generating around 30 per cent of global emissions, using energy-efficient batteries in EVs is a vital part of sustainable living. ASEAN’s electric vehicle market is anticipated to witness a significant growth in the coming years, with a projected market volume of USD1.8 billion by 2028.
Raising awareness amongst ASEAN policymakers on the importance of regulatory coherence in industries, the pilot project is also expected to contribute in ASEAN’s effort to reduce unnecessary costs for industry players arising from the differences in electric vehicle product regulations as they engage with their counterparts regionally and internationally.
