PUTRAJAYA, 4 October 2018 – The ASEAN Day for Disaster Management was celebrated in Putrajaya, Malaysia, today in conjunction with the 6th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Disaster Management and the 7th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the ASEAN Agreement on Disaster Management and Emergency Response (AADMER).

The event was officiated by Malaysia’s Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad and joined by ASEAN Ministers in charge of disaster management, ASEAN Secretary-General Dato Lim Jock Hoi,  ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance  (AHA Centre) representatives, the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, local and international NGOs, and private sector representatives.

In his opening remarks, Tun Dr. Mahathir emphasised that the ASEAN Committee on Disaster Management has a major role in extending and coordinating support to ease the burden of ASEAN Countries.

The commemoration was followed by an ASEAN Day Humanitarian Ride, where public, private sector representatives, and government officials including the Special Malaysia Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team took part in a campaign to strengthen private-public partnership in building resilient communities and nations.

The ASEAN Committee on Disaster Management has been organising the ASEAN Day for Disaster Management annually since 2005, together with the commemoration of the International Day for Disaster Reduction, to raise public awareness on the importance of disaster risk reduction to lower the number of people affected by natural disasters.
