BANGKOK, 20 October 2022 – ASEAN and its partners reaffirmed their commitment to raise the ASEAN people’s public awareness on the importance of disaster risk reduction during the commemoration of ASEAN Day for Disaster Management (ADDM) 2022, today.
The ADDM is convened annually and jointly with the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (IDDRR) every 13 October. This year’s commemoration took place on 20 October in Bangkok and broadcasted live on the ASEAN Secretariat’s Youtube channel. Thailand as the current Chair of the ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Disaster Management (AMMDM) hosted the event.
This year’s theme, “Stronger Together in Balancing Action to Enhance Localisation for Disaster Resilience” complements the theme of IDDRR 2022 – “Early Warning and Early Action for All” which was adapted from the Sendai Framework Target.
In his remarks, AMMDM Chair Anupong Paojinda emphasised that “the themes of ADDM and IDDRR this year call for collaboration and support from all sectors in making our local communities resilient by equipping them with disaster risk information, early warning system, and means of disaster preparedness.’’
‘’In ASEAN, we have launched ASEAN Framework on Anticipatory Action in disaster management and fully developed ASEAN Disaster Monitoring and Response System which would allow the AHA Centre to integrate all monitoring of hazard data in ASEAN within one system,” he stated.
A video showcasing progress made by the ASEAN Committee on Disaster Management in 2022 was shown during the commemoration. It highlighted the ongoing implementation of the AADMER Work Programme 2021-2025, key documents particularly the ASEAN Regional Framework on Anticipatory Action in Disaster Management, as well as ASEAN’s active participation in the Global Platform and Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference on DRR, amongst others.
ADDM 2022 was commemorated at the side lines of the 10th AMMDM/110th COP to AADMER, which was held today. ASEAN Ministers in-charge of disaster management or their representatives, ASEAN Committee on Disaster Management members, ASEAN Sectoral bodies and partners were in attendance.
