PUTRAJAYA, 04 October 2018 – The ASEAN Ministers in charge of disaster management gathered in Putrajaya, Malaysia, today for the 6th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Disaster Management (AMMDM) and the 7th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to ASEAN Agreement on Disaster Management and Emergency Response (COP to AADMER).
The ministerial meeting was preceded by the commemoration of the ASEAN Day for Disaster Management, which was opened by Malaysia’s Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir bin Mohamad, in the presence of the ASEAN Ministers in charge of disaster management, and the ASEAN Secretary-General Dato Lim Jock Hoi.
The Ministers expressed their condolences and extended their heartfelt sympathies to the families affected by the earthquakes and tsunami that struck Central Sulawesi Province, Indonesia.
The meeting exchanged views on the progress of the implementation of the AADMER Work Programme 2016-2020 and on emerging disasters in ASEAN. The meeting also charted out the priorities of cooperation for ASEAN on better disaster preparedness as well as mitigating and reducing disaster risks.
The Ministers expressed commitments to enhance ASEAN’s joint disaster response, emphasised the importance of enhancing ASEAN Member States’ disaster preparedness capacity, and advised to explore public-private partnership opportunities in the resilience building of ASEAN Communities. The 6th AMMDM and 7th COP to AAMDER was chaired by Dato’ Seri Dr. Wan Azizah binti Dato’ Dr. Wan Ismail, Malaysia’s Deputy Prime Minister.

In addition, each Member State shall appoint a Permanent Representative to liaise with Secretary-General of ASEAN and the ASEAN Secretariat
