JAKARTA/ZURICH, 5 August – The ASEAN Senior Officials Meeting on Sports (SOMS) kicked-off its collaboration with the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) with a virtual workshop to identify potential activities for the ASEAN-FIFA Collaboration Plan.
At the workshop, FIFA representatives introduced their ongoing programmes and activities relevant to the areas of cooperation defined under the ASEAN-FIFA MOU, which was signed at the 35th ASEAN Summit in Bangkok, Thailand.
During the virtual breakout sessions, SOMS discussed how its collaboration with FIFA will complement the current football development efforts taken at the national level.
The workshop addressed topics such as; sports integrity and the fight against malpractices in sports, stadium and tournament safety and security, the safeguarding of women and children in and through football, and football development in ASEAN. The workshop also mentioned a possible side event to take place at the U-20 FIFA World Cup in 2021.
The ASEAN-FIFA Collaboration Plan is being developed in parallel with the ASEAN Work Plan on Sports 2021-2025 and aims to support the upcoming Work Plan’s implementation.
ASEAN and FIFA launched the #BeActive campaign videos on 23 July as part the ASEAN-FIFA Joint Awareness Campaign on COVID-19. This campaign is in line with the joint commitment to promote Sports for Development set out in the ASEAN-FIFA MOU.

ASEAN organs always strive to achieve ASEAN’s goals and objectives, the Secretary-General of ASEAN and the ASEAN Secretariat shall be functioned as coordinating Secretariat to help facilitate effective decision-making withing and amongst ASEAN bodies. In addition, each Member State shall appoint a Permanent Representative to liaise with Secretary-General of ASEAN and the ASEAN Secretariat
