The ASEAN Foreign Ministers welcomed the successful conclusion of a historic summit meeting between the United States (US) and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) in Singapore on 12 June 2018. The joint statement signed between US President Donald J Trump and Chairman of the State Affairs Commission of the DPRK Kim Jong Un is a significant first step towards the realisation of lasting peace and stability on a denuclearised Korean Peninsula. The Ministers encourage the US and the DPRK to fully implement the Statement in order to lay the groundwork to establish a lasting and stable peace regime and complete denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula.

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations, or ASEAN, was established on 8 August 1967 in Bangkok, Thailand, with the signing of the ASEAN Declaration (Bangkok Declaration) by the Founding Fathers of ASEAN: Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand.
