JAKARTA, 31 October 2016 – Germany, conferred the status of Development Partner of ASEAN in July 2016, will work with ASEAN to further strengthen the partnership. Michael Baron von Ungern-Sternberg, the new Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to ASEAN, conveyed this message during the presentation of his Letter of Credence to the Secretary-General of ASEAN Le Luong Minh, at the ASEAN Secretariat today.
Secretary-General Minh congratulated Germany for being conferred the status of the Development Partner of ASEAN and stated that the new status would boost Germany’s relations with ASEAN and its Member States. He said ASEAN looks forward to the convening of the inaugural ASEAN-Germany Joint Development Cooperation Committee to launch the new partnership and to further strengthen cooperation between ASEAN and Germany.
Ambassador von Ungern-Sternberg reassured Germany’s continued support to ASEAN as well as multilateralism world-wide as Germany believes that multilateral cooperation contributes to peace and stability. Emphasising that the success of the ASEAN regional integration is often compared with the European Union, he acknowledged that the fundamental aspiration of the two regional integrations are similar although the models of their respective integration processes are different.
Secretary-General Minh and Ambassador von Ungern-Sternberg also exchanged views on the recent developments in ASEAN-EU dialogue relations, particularly on the outcomes of the 21st ASEAN-EU Ministerial Meeting held on 13-14 October 2016 in Bangkok and the forthcoming 40th Anniversary of ASEAN-EU Dialogue Relations in 2017.
