YANGON, 27 October 2017 – Around 50 participants took part in a seminar that discussed the importance and benefits of international standards and conformity assessment. The seminar is a joint event of International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) – the National Metrology Institute of Germany, and the Department of Research and Innovation of Myanmar.
Participants were updated on IEC’s programmes with special attention to the opportunities for affiliate countries such as Myanmar. The importance of IEC standards was highlighted from different angles, especially from the industry perspective.
In addition, the seminar focused on the ASEAN Harmonised Electrical and Electronic Equipment Regulatory Regime. After a brief recapitulation of the history, elements and general relevance, the participants discussed current status and remaining challenges to the Agreement’s full implementation in Myanmar.
IEC is the world’s leading organization for the preparation and publication of International Standards for all electrical, electronic and related technologies. PTB, under the ASEAN-PTB project “Improving Quality Infrastructure in ASEAN,” cooperates with ASEAN to fulfill the goals of the ASEAN Economic Community Blueprints with the main focus on reducing technical barriers to trade.
