BANGKOK, 29 April 2021 – Senior Officials of ASEAN and India discussed a range of cooperation to further strengthen ASEAN-India strategic partnership at the 23rd ASEAN-India Senior Officials Meeting held yesterday.
The meeting exchanged views on the developments in ASEAN and India, including responses to the COVID-19 pandemic, post-pandemic recovery and explored potentials for cooperation in the post-pandemic phase.
Thet two sides discussed ways and means to further strengthen cooperation in several areas of mutual interest, including counter terrorism, violent extremism and transnational crimes, maritime cooperation, enhanced regional connectivity, trade and finance, investment and economic cooperation.
Cooperation in areas such as climate change, agriculture, disaster management, education, cultural and people-to-people linkages, sustainable development, narrowing the development gaps, science and technology, and digital transformation and cybersecurity were also discussed.
ASEAN and India noted the progress in the implementation of decisions made by Leaders at the 17th ASEAN-India Summit last year and the implementation of the new ASEAN-India Plan of Action for the 2021-2025 period.
The senior officials also exchanged views on the evolving regional architecture and major power relations.
The 23rd ASEAN-India Senior Officials’ Meeting was co-chaired by Secretary (East) of the External Affairs Ministry, and SOM Leader of India Riva Ganguly Das, and Permanent Secretary of the Foreign Affairs Ministry and SOM Leader of Thailand Thani Thongphakdi. Other ASEAN SOM Leaders, their representatives and the Deputy Secretary-General of ASEAN for the ASEAN Political-Security Community were also in attendance.
