JAKARTA, 12 September 2017 – The Government of Japan extends its continued support to ASEAN through the Japan-East Asia Network of Exchange for Students and Youths (JENESYS) Programme. The JENESYS2017 is implemented from September 2017 until March 2018 and is targeted to mobilise more than 1,300 youth from the ASEAN Member States to Japan and conversely 190 youth from Japan to the ASEAN countries.
As one of the ASEAN-Japan flagship programmes, JENESYS promotes mutual trust and understanding among the peoples of Japan and ASEAN, and builds a basis for future friendship and cooperation.
Since 2007, JENESYS has served as a platform for students and youth exchange between Japan and ASEAN. It provides opportunities for ASEAN students and youth to experience a ten-day programme in Japan that features activities to enhance understanding of Japan and ASEAN such as homestays, visits to local communities and industries, and keynote lectures. JENESYS features various themes and focus areas such as education, culture, economic, environment, sports, disaster management and others.
On its 10th year, the JENESYS Programme contributes significantly to people-to-people interaction and exchanges, and promotes development of youth in line with the ASEAN Work Plan on Youth 2016-2020. The JENESYS2017 Programme specifically features several sports exchanges such as football, rugby, badminton, and karate to raise awareness on the upcoming Tokyo Olympics in 2020.
