BUSAN, 14 November 2016 - The 3rd Seminar on the ROK-ASEAN Socio-Cultural Partnership was held on 11 November in Busan, Republic of Korea. The Seminar aimed to highlight the importance of socio-cultural partnership as a backbone of the ASEAN-Korea relations and the ASEAN community development, and to share perspectives on challenges and prospects for the bilateral relations.

The seminar provided a wide range of views and ideas to further enhance socio-cultural reciprocity between ASEAN and the ROK, including possible activities for the ASEAN-ROK cultural exchange year in 2017, the progress of the ASEAN Culture House, and joint initiatives to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of ASEAN.

“I trust that the outcomes of the seminar will catalyse further interest and action in our cooperation and envision that its uptake will contribute to achieving greater regional understanding and cooperation not only between ASEAN and the ROK but also for ASEAN’s partnership and cooperation with other members of the international community,” said Vongthep Arthakaivalvatee, Deputy Secretary-General of ASEAN for Socio-Cultural Community, in his welcome remarks.

The seminar was organised for the first time to commemorate the 25th Anniversary of ASEAN-ROK Dialogue relations in Jakarta in 2014, and is now being hosted annually. This year, the seminar had the participation from high-ranking officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of ROK, Ambassadors of the Philippines and the ROK to ASEAN, Secretary-General of ASEAN-Korea Centre, Executive Director of ASEAN Foundation, representatives from ASEAN Committee for Culture and Information of Myanmar and Thailand, officers of several ASEAN-ROK cooperation projects, cultural centre/museum and university researchers, and students.

The seminar was co-organised by the ASEAN-Korea Centre, Mission of the Republic of Korea to ASEAN, and hosted by the Institute for Southeast Asian Studies of Busan University of Foreign Studies.
