SEOUL, 11 April 2023 – Tomorrow, the ASEAN-Korea Centre and Korea Institute for International Economic Policy (KIEP) will hold the ASEAN-Korea Trade and Investment Roundtable 2023 with the theme ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific (AOIP) & Korea’s Indo-Pacific Strategy. The roundtable will take place in a hybrid format and will be live-streamed through the ASEAN-Korea Centre’s YouTube channel at 14:00 (Korea Time).
Marking its 3rd anniversary this year, the ASEAN-Korea Trade and Investment Roundtable has served as a platform to share opinions on the benefits of regional free trade agreements such as the ASEAN-Korea Free Trade Agreement and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership to businesspeople and stakeholders in both ASEAN and Korea.
This year, the roundtable will focus on ASEAN and Korea’s regional strategies for the Indo-Pacific region through the AOIP as well as ROK’s Indo-Pacific Strategy. Specifically, the roundtable aims to share up-to-date information on the economic and trade outlooks and explore new opportunities for economic cooperation between ASEAN and Korea within the Indo-Pacific framework.
Deputy Secretary-General for ASEAN Economic Community Satvinder Singh and Director Kwak Sungil of the Korea Institute for International Economic Policy (KIEP) will share how the AOIP and ROK’s Indo-Pacific Strategy can provide opportunities to enhance partnerships between ASEAN and Korea and further contribute to regional growth.
In the following discussion sessions, experts from Korea Institute for Industrial Economics & Trade, KIEP, ASEAN Secretariat, and Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia will also exchange views and discuss ways to explore synergies through cooperation in digital trade, climate change, and supply chain, which are some of the strategic sectors prioritised by both ASEAN and Korea.
Secretary General Kim Hae-yong of the ASEAN-Korea Centre noted, “the roundtable is timely and meaningful as discussions on tangible and practical economic cooperation efforts based on the context of regional strategies such as AOIP and ROK’s Indo-Pacific Strategy are in need for both ASEAN and Korea, especially in the midst of global uncertainty and economic slowdown after COVID-19.”
He added, “the roundtable could provide insights for the businesspeople of ASEAN and Korea to discover potential business opportunities thereby contributing to strengthening the ASEAN-Korea partnership as a whole.”
