BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN/ONLINE, 15 December 2021 – ASEAN cemented its network of regional labour inspectors by establishing the ASEAN Labour Inspection Committee (ALICOM). The committee’s inaugural meeting took place online on 15 December.
ALICOM aims to enhance regional cooperation in labour inspection efficiency and effectiveness in hard-to-reach sectors and strengthening referral systems. Leveraging best practices across Member States, the committee will facilitate knowledge sharing on strategies and innovations to support labour law compliance relating to work conditions and protection of workers.
Chaired by Brunei Darussalam, the meeting deliberated on the potential priorities of cooperation towards harmonious, safe and progressive workplaces in the region. It was convened in conjunction with the 10th ASEAN Labour Inspection Conference on 14-15 December.
Focal points and other regional stakeholders took the opportunity to discuss competencies of labour inspectors for better preparedness and response to future challenges.
The 2nd meeting of the ASEAN Labour Inspection Committee will be chaired and hosted by Cambodia in 2022. The Terms of Reference of the ASEAN Labour Inspection Committee is available here.
