ASEAN Labour Officials convene the 17th SLOM-WG meeting

17th SLOM-WG Meeting (1)

Virtual, 20 August 2024 – Senior officials from labour ministries of ASEAN Member States joined the 17th Meeting of SLOM’s Working Group on Progressive Labour Practices to Enhance the Competitiveness of ASEAN (SLOM-WG) conducted virtually by Singapore. Labour officials from Timor-Leste also attended the meeting as observers.

The meeting reviewed the implementation progress of regional initiatives, including the plan to develop an ASEAN guidelines on strengthening labour inspection in the fishing sector, conduct a regional study on business engagement models for up-skilling and reskilling workers in response to the fourth industrial revolution, and expand the application of the ASEAN Guiding Principles for Strengthening Quality Assurance and Recognition of Competency Certification Systems in the region. 

The progress of regular updating of the ASEAN informal employment statistical database and ASEAN labour productivity index was reviewed, and activities to implement the ASEAN Roadmap for the Elimination of the Worst Forms of Child Labour by 2024 were also planned. 

The meeting deliberated on the development of the post-2025 work plan of SLOM-WG. Singapore assumed the SLOM-WG Chairmanship for 2024-2026. Next year, the 18th Meeting of SLOM-WG will be hosted by Cambodia.
