ASEAN, partners advance sports cooperation

CHIANG MAI, 1 September 2023 –  Thailand’s Ministry of Tourism and Sports hosted the Seventh ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Sports (AMMS-7) and Related Meetings attended by partner organisations and Timor-Leste as observer.

 

Highlights of the meeting series include the inaugural convening of ASEAN Plus China Ministerial Meeting on Sports (1st AMMS+China) as a new mechanism for ASEAN-China sports cooperation, as well as the launch of the 1st ASEAN Physical Fitness Indicators (APFI) Report, a key deliverable of Thailand’s sports sector chairpersonship as a commitment under Programme 2.2 of the ASEAN Work Plan on Sports 2021-2025. The report will be submitted to the 43rdASEAN Summit for ASEAN Leaders’ notation.

 

Another highlight is the deliberation for the preparations for the First Meeting of Technical Working Group on ASEAN’s Joint Bid for the FIFA World Cup 2034 under Thailand’s leadership.

 

At the 4th AMMS+Japan, Japan shared an example of the ASEAN-Japan cooperation on sports in the Cambodia SEA Games 2023 in the deployment of National Technical Officers to the ASEAN Para Games. To enhance the ASEAN-Japan sports cooperation towards the final year of the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals, the meeting adopted the Chiang Mai Declaration on Strengthening ASEAN-Japan Cooperation on Sports Toward 2030 for notation of ASEAN-Japan Leaders at ASEAN-Japan 50th Anniversary Commemorative Summit in December 2023.

 

At the 1st AMMS+China, ASEAN and China welcomed an emerging priority on traditional sports and games through an upcoming project by UNESCO.

 

Thailand’s Minister of Tourism and Sports Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn chaired the AMMS-7 and co-chaired the 4th AMMS+Japan alongside Ide Yosei, Japan’s State Minister for Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. For the 1st AMMS+China, Wang Ruilian, Vice Minister, General Administration of Sport of China, served as co-chair alongside Thailand.

 

Noting the Leaders’ Statement on the in-principle ASEAN Membership of Timor-Leste, the AMMS welcomed the inaugural participation of Timor-Leste as observer in the meetings.

 

Alongside the meetings, a panel discussion themed We Win As One: Unveiling Success Stories in Sports for Youth Crime Prevention in ASEAN Region was organised by Thailand Institute of Justice. Japan Sports Agency also organised the side event ASEAN-Japan Business Meeting on Sports Showcase from 31 August to 1 September.

 

Incoming Chair of the ASEAN sports sector Viet Nam will assume the title on 1 January 2024 and host the SOMS in October 2024.
