The ASEAN Post-Ministerial Conference with the European Union (EU) was convened in Vientiane today, attended by the ASEAN Foreign Ministers or their representatives, the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell, and Deputy Secretary-General of ASEAN for ASEAN Political-Security Community Dato’ Astanah Abdul Aziz. Timor-Leste attended as an Observer. The Meeting discussed ways to substantiate the ASEAN-EU Strategic Partnership as well as looked forward to working with the new EU leadership appointed to office. Apart from that, both sides exchanged views on key regional and international issues of common concern.

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations, or ASEAN, was established on 8 August 1967 in Bangkok, Thailand, with the signing of the ASEAN Declaration (Bangkok Declaration) by the Founding Fathers of ASEAN: Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand.
