JAKARTA, 25 April 2019 – Representatives of the ASEAN Senior Officials Meeting on Youth reviewed the implementation of the ASEAN Work Plan on Youth 2016-2020 at a workshop in Jakarta on 25 April.
The meeting noted that approximately 62% of the work plan has been implemented, prominently highlighting activities pertaining to youth volunteering and exchange programmes.
Participants agreed that a clear and practical cross-sectoral collaboration mechanism, innovative resource mobilisation strategies and integration of monitoring and evaluation component were instrumental for the successful implementation of the work plan. These were based on reflection on challenges experienced by ASEAN Member States in realising the aspirations set forth by the work plan.
Touching upon the Post-2020 agenda, the five domains of ASEAN Youth Development Index were considered as a possible reference in structuring the new ASEAN Work Plan on Youth.
Youth participation in policy making and enablement of future ready ASEAN were two emerging topics envisioned as potential priorities in ASEAN youth development. ASEAN Member States further noted that aspirations prescribed in the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community Blueprint 2025 as well as relevant ASEAN Declarations should be considered when crafting the Post-2020 ASEAN Work Plan on Youth.
The validation workshop was hosted by Indonesia as the Chair of the ASEAN Senior Officials Meeting on Youth, following an exercise to stocktake the implementation of the ASEAN Work Plan on Youth 2016-2020 half way throughout its implementation period.
