NAY PYI TAW, 28 August 2017 – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Myanmar and Republic of Korea (ROK) Mission to ASEAN with the support of Myanmar Mission to ASEAN held the 2nd Workshop on ASEAN-ROK Cooperation Mechanism at the Hilton Hotel in Nay Pyi Taw on 17 August.

The workshop aimed to derive maximum possible benefits from ROK-funded project via demonstration of the best practices and dissemination of information on ASEAN project cycle management; build capacities for relevant ministries and agencies of Myanmar in drafting and realising projects within the framework of ASEAN-ROK Cooperation Fund (AKCF); and create opportunity for ASEAN to benefit more effectively from AKCF.

In his opening remarks, ROK Ambassador to ASEAN Suh Jeong-in said, “I am proud to say that Korea-ASEAN relations have become one of the most dynamic relations for ASEAN among its various dialogue partners. Also, I believe that the well-established ASEAN-ROK cooperation mechanism, namely, the ASEAN-ROK Cooperation Fund (AKCF), will continuously help us deepen as well as widen partnerships for our shared future.”

The deep appreciation of AKCF was echoed by the Director-General for ASEAN Affairs Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Myanmar, U Myint Thu who mentioned that “we appreciate AKCF’s commitment in supporting ASEAN’s efforts in narrowing the development gap through capacity building within the framework of the Initiatives for ASEAN Integration.”

During the workshop, two flagship projects of AKCF were jointly presented by the ROK proponents and the Myanmar partners. The projects are the ASEAN-Korea Environmental Cooperation Project (AKECOP) and ASEAN-ROK Film Leaders Incubator.

The event gathered almost 100 government officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Myanmar as well as other line ministries.
