JAKARTA, 23 April 2018 – ASEAN and the Republic of Korea (ROK) reaffirmed commitment to further strengthen their strategic partnership and enhance cooperation following an Ambassador-level meeting at the ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta on 20 April.

At the meeting, both sides reviewed the implementation of the Plan of Action 2016-2020 and discussed the follow-up to the decisions of the ASEAN-ROK Summit which was held in November last year.

Both sides also discussed cooperation in areas of mutual interest including in trade and investment, food and agriculture, disaster management, environmental protection, connectivity, culture, education, and people to people exchanges, and agreed to redouble efforts to further enhance collaboration in these areas.

Further, they exchanged views on recent developments in their respective regions, including developments on the Korean Peninsula. ASEAN Member States welcomed the New Southern Policy initiated by President Moon Jae-in in which the ROK will seek to substantially enhance cooperation with ASEAN to further deepen and broaden the ASEAN-ROK Strategic Partnership. Both sides also noted that 2019 will mark the 30th anniversary of ASEAN-ROK Dialogue Relations which will add momentum to advancing the partnership.

The fifth meeting of the ASEAN-ROK Joint Cooperation Committee  was co-chaired by Norng Sakal, Permanent Representative of Cambodia to ASEAN as Country Coordinator of ASEAN-ROK Dialogue Relations, and Kim Young-chae, Ambassador of the ROK to ASEAN, and attended by the Permanent Representatives of ASEAN Member States and the ASEAN Secretariat.
