KUALA LUMPUR, 22 May 2015 – ASEAN and Russia showed mutual interest to further deepen ASEAN-Russia relationship at the 12th ASEAN-Russia Senior Officials’ Meeting (12th ARSOM) held on 19-20 May in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The Meeting discussed recent developments in the respective region and agreed to work together to promote peace and stability.

Russia expressed firm commitment to support ASEAN’s community-building efforts and described it as one of the most successful regional organisations. For its part, ASEAN recognised Russia’s active and positive contribution to ASEAN-led mechanisms, particularly the East Asia Summit (EAS), the ASEAN Regional Forum and the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting Plus. ASEAN welcomed Russia’s continued intention to enhance its relationship with ASEAN in various sectors including energy, science and technology, transportation, agriculture, and tourism. ASEAN and Russia are currently developing the Plan of Action for the next five years to replace the present plan which expires in end-2015.

Meanwhile, Russia acknowledged ASEAN’s bid to ensure peace and stability in the region through peaceful means and in accordance with international law. Russia also noted and supported ASEAN’s efforts to ensure a peaceful and rules-based regional architecture with the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia as the cornerstone. Both sides noted the threat of violent extremism and terrorism and agreed to work closely to address this growing global threat and other transnational crimes such as illicit drugs. Russia also assured its continued efforts to help ASEAN in addressing challenges brought about by natural disasters.

The year 2016 will mark the 20th Anniversary of the ASEAN-Russia relations and both sides agreed to convene an ASEAN-Russia Commemorative Summit to celebrate this milestone.
