ASEAN sets 5-year plan for cooperation on sports

SINGAPORE, 28 October 2021 – The Sixth ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Sports (AMMS-6) convened under Singapore’s Chairmanship and adopted the ASEAN Work Plan on Sports 2021-2025.

 

 

Building on the achievements made through implementation of the ASEAN Work Plan on Sports 2016-2020, the next five-year work plan aims for an active ASEAN Community where sports serve as an essential means in advancing socio-cultural development and promoting peace.

 

 

The ASEAN Work Plan on Sports 2021-2025 encompasses five priority areas:

  • Sports’ Contribution to Key Development Outcomes and Peace;
  • Promotion of Healthy Lifestyle through Sports Participation and Physical Activities;
  • Professional Capacity Development, Sports Integrity and Sports Science;
  •  Promoting ASEAN Awareness through Sports Activities, Sports Tourism and Sports Industry; and
  • Resource Mobilisation, Partner Engagement, and Monitoring and Evaluation for ASEAN Cooperation on Sports.

The Singaporean Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth hosted the Sixth ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Sports (AMMS-6), Third ASEAN Plus Japan Ministerial Meeting on Sports (3rd AMMS+Japan), and Related Meetings throughout 26 – 28 October, via videoconference.

 

 

As key deliverables of Singapore’s sports sector chairpersonship, AMMS-6 also adopted the Joint Statement of ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Sports on Cementing Strong Foundation for ASEAN Athletes at the SEA Games, and looked forward to the signing of Memorandum of Understanding between ASEAN and the World Anti-Doping Agency.

 

At the event, Singapore also presented a special tribute video to the AMMS, to honour ASEAN athletes’ accomplishments at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

 

 

Other highlights include the adoption of the ASEAN-FIFA Collaboration Plan 2021-2022 by AMMS-6, Singapore’s presentation of the benchmark report of Active Citizens Worldwide Research Study on the Contribution of Sports to Socio-Economic Development in 10 ASEAN cities, and preparations for the First Meeting of Technical Working Group on ASEAN’s Joint Bid for the FIFA World Cup 2034 under Thailand’s leadership.

 

 

As part of Brunei Darussalam’s 2021 ASEAN Chairmanship priority on Strengthening of ASEAN Centrality through ASEAN-Led Framework, the possibility of establishing new sports mechanisms was explored with the representative of General Administration of Sport of China. Subsequently, AMMS-6 welcomed China’s positive response on the possible establishment of SOMS+China and AMMS+China in 2022.

 

 

At the 3rd AMMS+Japan, ASEAN congratulated Japan for hosting the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games. ASEAN and Japan ministers also welcomed the emerging priority on sports industry and sports science. They look forward to establish collaborative activities on sports management as Tokyo 2020 legacy.

 

 

Singapore’s Minister for Culture, Community and Youth, Edwin Tong, chaired the AMMS-6. He co-chaired the 3rd AMMS+Japan alongside Harumi Takahashi, Japan’s Vice-Minister for Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.

 

 

The next ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Sports is tentatively scheduled for October 2023 in Thailand.
