The Secretary-General of ASEAN, H.E. Dr. Surin Pisuwan received Letter of Credence as Ambassador to ASEAN from H.E. Zekeriya Akcam, the current Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Turkey to the Republic of Indonesia, yesterday at ASEAN Secretariat.
Dr Surin extended his warm welcome to Ambassador Akcam’s official assumption of his role as the Ambassador of Turkey to ASEAN and that he and the ASEAN Secretariat looked forward to working closely with Ambassador Akcam to further strengthen the relationship between ASEAN and Turkey.
Ambassador Akcam informed Dr. Surin the desire of his Government to strengthen relations with ASEAN. He also briefed on the recent developments in his country, especially and the situations in Turkey’s neighbouring countries and region.
SG Dr. Surin stated that the interest, commitment and orientation shown by Turkey towards ASEAN is appreciated. They also explored practical ways and means to further enhance ASEAN cooperation with Turkey such as business-to-business contact, short training courses to provide an opportunity for officials from ASEAN Member States to learn about Turkey and establish networking and mutual understanding, among others. Dr. Surin advised Turkey to also engage the ASEAN Committee already established in Ankara.
The Republic of Turkey acceded to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC) on 23 July 2010 In Ha Noi, Viet Nam.
