JAKARTA, 29 May 2015 - The Kingdom of Spain expressed its strong interest to enhance relationship and closer cooperation with ASEAN yesterday. Spain’s new Ambassador to ASEAN, H.E. Franscisco José Viqueira Niel conveyed this message to ASEAN Secretary-General, H.E. Le Luong Minh.
At the presentation of his Letter of Credence to SG Minh, Ambassador Niel stated that supporting multilateralism has been a long-standing basic element of Spain’s foreign policy. Further, he said that Spain regards ASEAN as a fast-growing and dynamic regional organisation which plays an important role in the region and beyond.
SG Minh congratulated Ambassador Niel on his assumption of duty and welcomed the Spanish government’s renewed interest in pursuing closer relationship and cooperation with ASEAN, both bilaterally as well as under the ASEAN-EU framework. SG Minh stated that there is a vast potential for cooperation between ASEAN and Spain. He further encouraged Ambassador Niel to explore practical cooperative activities that could be undertaken with ASEAN in the areas of mutual interest. SG Minh also updated Ambassador Niel on the progress of the ASEAN Community building.
