BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, 7 May 2024 – The 44th ASEAN Committee on Disaster Management (ACDM) meeting took place in Brunei Darussalam, alongside a series of meetings focused on strengthening regional cooperation in disaster management and humanitarian assistance.
Held from 7-10 May, these meetings included the 20th Governing Board of the AHA Centre, 7th ACDM Plus China, 7th ACDM Plus Japan, 6th ACDM Plus ROK and 5th ASEAN Disaster Resilience Platform.
Brunei Darussalam’s National Disaster Management Centre, as ACDM Chair 2024, hosted the meetings under the theme “Building a resilient ASEAN through inclusive and sustainable disaster recovery”.
The meetings noted the progress in the implementation of the AADMER Work Programme 2021-2025, particularly the ASEAN Disaster Law and Public Health Emergency (PHE) Mapping and Guidelines, Report on Transboundary Disaster Risk Assessment and Scenario Planning for Tropical Cyclones and Droughts in the Region, Report on Strengthening ASEAN Multi-Hazard End to End Early Warning System for Natural Disasters (E2E EWS) – An Assessment of Current Capacity, and ASEAN Capacity Building Roadmap 2025-2030 on Disaster Management.
The ACDM also commemorates the 20th Anniversary of the Indian Ocean Tsunami in 2024 in which the ACDM will develop the ASEAN Ministerial Declaration on Building a Resilience ASEAN through Inclusive and Sustainable Disaster Recovery; ASEAN Ministerial Statement on the Commemoration of the 20th Anniversary of Indian Ocean Tsunami; and hold a series of commemorative events in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand.
The focus on regional cooperation continues later this year with the 45th ACDM Meeting and the 13th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Disaster Management, scheduled for an in-person gathering in October 2024.
