ASEAN is working towards its own trade facilitation indicators. To familiarise ASEAN trade and customs officials with the World Bank’s Ease of Doing Business (EoDB) survey methodology, a workshop was held last week in Ha Noi. Ms Mikiko Imai Ollison, a private sector development specialist with the Bank’s Doing Business Unit demonstrated the features of the EoDB and how the survey provides information on the time and costs of fulfilling export and import procedures.

During the workshop, participants also learned about measures undertaken by Malaysia to improve its ranking in the annual EoDB report. Efforts to reduce the cost of doing business require political commitments at the highest level and the need to establish a dedicated mechanism to ensure continuous push towards reforms. The Malaysian government’s establishment of PEMUDAH, the special Task Force to Facilitate Business, and its working groups, promoted active involvement and collaboration between the public and private sectors.

The workshop was jointly organised by the ASEAN Secretariat, the United States Government-funded ASEAN-US Technical Assistance and Training Facility and the World Bank Group.
