ASEAN to explore market surveillance of non-automatic weighing instruments

19

Officials of legal metrology authorities from all ASEAN Member States participated in the “Workshop on Developing an ASEAN-wide approach on Market Surveillance of Non-automatic Weighing Instruments (NAWIs)” on 13 July 2017 in Myanmar. The workshop aims to introduce the concept of market surveillance for NAWIs, to get to know the market surveillance situation among ASEAN Member States and to explore an ASEAN-wide approach on Market Surveillance of NAWIs.

The workshop provided participants with knowledge and best practices on market surveillance for metrology instruments. It also provided opportunity to exchange information among Member States on their market surveillance systems. The workshop agreed to develop a document that would contain comprehensive and detailed information on market surveillance that would outline possible approaches to market surveillance in ASEAN.

Legal metrology is the application of legal requirements to measurements and measuring instruments. The National Metrology Institute of Germany (PTB) is working hand in hand with ASEAN Consultative Committee on Standards and Quality (ACCSQ) Working Group on Legal Metrology (WG 3) to further progress with its activities in this area. This will assist ASEAN in moving forwards towards the objective of establishing an integrated single market and production base with a free flow of goods through the elimination of technical barriers to trade.

The workshop was organised by PTB in cooperation with the Department of Research and Institute of Myanmar, and the ACCSQ WG 3.
