Yogyakarta, 24 October 2018 – Representatives from ACCSQ Working Group 3 on Legal Metrology (WG 3) and Expert Group on Metrology (EGM) met for the first time in a Joint Workshop on 23 – 24 October 2018 in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, The Joint Workshop served as platform for both bodies to discuss and identify work items on which it would be beneficial for WG3 (legal metrology) and EGM (scientific metrology) to work jointly in the future, including to draw-up an initial outline of a Roadmap for Metrology in ASEAN.

The workshop provided participants with opportunity to come up with a joint action plan between WG 3 and EGM consisting of suitable activities clustered into various different topics. The workshop also agreed that a proposal for an ASEAN Metrology Framework should be developed. The workshop further recommended that the implementation of joint Action Plan should be monitored by a Steering Group drawn from both EGM and WG3.  It was expected that this Steering Group would function mainly as an online group that reports to both WG3 and EGM on a regular basis.

The workshop was facilitated and supported by Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB), the National Metrology Institute of Germany.

Legal metrology is the practice and process of applying regulatory structure and enforcement to metrology. It comprises all activities for which legal requirements are prescribed on measurement, measuring instruments and systems and methods. The PTB Germany is working hand in hand with WG 3 to further progress its activity in this area. This will assist ASEAN in moving forwards towards the objective of establishing an integrated single market and production base with a free flow of goods through the elimination of technical barriers to trade.
