VIENTIANE, 26 October 2016 – “The fruits of ASEAN regional integration have to be shared and enjoyed by all, including the rural poor, the vulnerable and underprivileged,” stated Dr AKP Mochtan, Deputy Secretary-General of ASEAN for Community and Corporate Affairs. He emphasised this in his keynote address at the 10th General Assembly of the Asian Partnership for the Development of Human Resources in Rural Areas (AsiaDHRRA) held on 24-26 October in Vientiane, Lao PDR.

Further, DSG Mochtan said that “the bulk of the ASEAN population resides in rural areas, where our staple food is produced and where the very fabric of the society comes from and is woven of.”

Focusing on the theme “Localizing the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals and ASEAN Community Vision 2025: The Role of Rural Development Organizations and Rural People’s Organizations,” the meeting identified modalities to build greater synergy and convergence toward the realization of the goals of the UN’s SDG 2030 and ASEAN’s Vision 2025, particularly those aimed at the betterment of the peoples in the rural areas.

More than 50 participants from DHRRA partners in ASEAN, AsiaDHRRA Secretariat and other partners such as Food and Agriculture Organization, International Fund for Agricultural Development, United Nations Development Programme, European Union, International non-governmental organization, and local NGOs took part in the discussion.
