In line with the World Autism Awareness Day on 2 April, the 2nd Viet Nam Autism Awareness Day (VAAD) was celebrated in Ho Chi Minh City on 1-2 April. The event aims to raise public awareness about autism and find the needs, issues and solutions to help people with autism integrate into their community and society.

On the first day, a conference called “ASEAN Autism – Issues, Needs and Solutions” was held to provide an overview of the current policies to support the needs of individuals living with autism; introduce the current models for early identification, early intervention, inclusive education and vocational training for individuals with autism; and foster dialogue about policies and future solutions to improve the lives and wellbeing of individuals with autism.

The Viet Nam Autism Friendship Games 2017 was held on the second day at Ton Duc Thang University. Deputy Secretary-General of ASEAN for ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community Vongthep Arthakaivalvatee said that “our gathering today is a remarkable example of what ASEAN wants to achieve, which is a more inclusive ASEAN Community where no one is left behind,” during his opening speech. “ASEAN stands together side by side with all of you in championing the rights and welfare of persons with autism,” he further added.

Children with autism performed musical numbers during the event. There were also fun games such as tug of war, bag jumping, and far jump. The participants were invited to write their wishes for people with autism on balloons.

The organizers and participants were of the view that the celebration of autism awareness day is a tangible approach to create autism-friendly environment. It was noted that it is a concrete effort towards achieving a truly inclusive ASEAN community.
