PHNOM PENH, 29 July 2016 – More than 20 representatives of legal metrology authorities from ASEAN Member States participated in a Train-the-Trainer Workshop called “Control of Pre-packaged Products” in Cambodia. The workshop aimed to support the uniform interpretation and implementation of the ASEAN Common Requirements for Pre-packaged Products based on the ASEAN Handbook for the practical application of these requirements.

Pre-packages controls are important for consumer protection since they help ensure that the real net content of pre-packaged products corresponds with the declared net content.

The workshop took place on 25-29 July 2016 in Phnom Penh and was facilitated by a trainer from Germany and by co-trainers from Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia. Participants from ASEAN Member States shared information on the status of pre-packages control from their countries during the five-day-workshop. Furthermore, the workshop provided participants with in-depth knowledge and experience in the area of pre-packaged products and included visits to companies where on-site tests were performed for practical demonstrations.

The workshop was organised by the National Metrology Institute of Germany (PTB) in cooperation with the Department of Legal Metrology of Cambodia and the ASEAN Consultative Committee on Standards and Quality (ACCSQ) Working Group 3 on Legal Metrology.

Legal metrology comprises all activities for which legal requirements are prescribed for measurement, measuring instruments and systems and methods, including enforcement. The PTB is working hand in hand with ACCSQ WG 3 to further progress with its activities in this area. This will assist ASEAN in establishing an integrated single market and production base with a free flow of goods through the elimination of technical barriers to trade.
