JAKARTA, 21 October 2016 – ASEAN and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) agreed to deepen their cooperation at the ASEAN-UNESCO Joint Meeting held at the ASEAN Secretariat yesterday.

“This is a timely meeting for UNESCO and ASEAN to take a look at the progress and achievements thus far of our cooperation described in the Framework Agreement for Cooperation signed in 2013,” stressed Vongthep Arthakaivalvatee, Deputy Secretary General of ASEAN for Socio-Cultural Community.

The meeting identified three priority clusters in 2017-2018, namely: education; culture, communication and information; and environment, science and technology.

“It is important to review and monitor the progress of the cooperation and think about ways to strengthen the cooperation in order to have more impact on the people,” said Mohamed Djelid, Deputy Director of the Bureau of Strategic Planning, UNESCO.

The meeting also discussed ways to synergise ASEAN-UNESCO partnership with the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Goals and the ASEAN Vision 2025.
