H.E. Mr. Paulo Alberto da Silveira Soares, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Federative Republic of Brazil to Indonesia presented his Letter of Credence to H.E. Dr. Surin Pitsuwan, Secretary-General of ASEAN today at the ASEAN Secretariat.

Ambassador Soares expressed his gratitude to ASEAN and its Member States for accepting him as the Ambassador of the Federative Republic of Brazil to ASEAN. In response, Dr. Surin extended his warm welcome to Ambassador Soares’ official assumption of his tour of duty as the Ambassador of the Federative Republic of Brazil to ASEAN. Dr. Surin also expressed his appreciation for the enthusiasm shown by the Ambassador of Brazil to ASEAN and suggested that Brazil, as one of the Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa (BRICS)economies, to reach out and be present in the region in its areas of competence dealing with the priority sectors of ASEAN. DrSurin informed Ambassador Soares that the ASEAN Secretariat looks forward to working closely with him to further enhance the relationship between ASEAN and Brazil and the rest of Latin America.

Ambassador Soaresunderlined the strong commitment of the Government of Brazil to deepen its cooperation with ASEAN. He also attached great importance to the promotion of cooperative relations between ASEAN and Braziland the rest of Latin America. In order to implement this initiative, some training courses in areas of mutual interest,such as sustainable development, renewable and energy security, food security, poverty eradication, and other cooperation issuesinvolving intellectuals, researchers, diplomats, business executive, government officials, and think-tanks from the two sides would be convoked regularly in Brazil. The initiative aims at enhancing the cooperation and raising people’s awareness on the importance of cooperation between ASEAN and Brazil and the rest of Latin America. Ambassador Soares hoped that Brazil could share its sound practiceswith ASEAN on a number of issues including poverty reduction and online banking transactions. He also conveyed to Dr. Surin that he hopesthe Brazilian Minister of External Affairs would be able to attend the accession of Brazil to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation (TAC) in Southeast Asia at the 45th AMM/ PMC/ 19th ARF/ 2nd EAS FMM in July 2012 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
