JAKARTA, 29 May 2015- ASEAN continues to be an important cornerstone of Viet Nam’s foreign policy, said Viet Nam’s new Permanent Representative (PR) to ASEAN yesterday.
Presenting his Letter of Credence to the Secretary-General of ASEAN, H.E. Le Luong Minh, at a ceremony held at the ASEAN Secretariat, H.E. Nguyen Hoanh Nam said that he would continue to work closely with his colleagues at the Committee of Permanent Representatives to ASEAN (CPR) and the ASEAN Secretariat to support ASEAN community-building efforts, strengthen the ASEAN Secretariat, and enhance ASEAN’s relations with Dialogue Partners and other external parties.
Noting that 2015 is a historical and significant year for ASEAN, both SG Minh and Ambassador Nam expressed the view that ASEAN must exert greater efforts to complete the implementation of the Roadmap for an ASEAN Community (2009-2015). They also agreed that the CPR and the ASEAN Secretariat must continue to work together to ensure effective and timely implementation of the relevant recommendations of the High Level Task Force on Strengthening the ASEAN Secretariat and Reviewing the ASEAN Organs. The recommendations were adopted by the 25th ASEAN Summit in November last year.
In his remarks, SG Minh stressed that the work of the CPR is instrumental towards the realisation of the ASEAN Community by the end of this year, especially in facilitating coordination on cross-pillar issues and enhancing ASEAN’s cooperation with Dialogue Partners and other external parties. The CPR would also be overseeing the implementation of commemorative activities to celebrate the ASEAN Community 2015 and undertaking outreach activities to bring ASEAN closer to the people.
Ambassador Nam, who was a Director-General at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Viet Nam prior to this appointment, succeeded Ambassador Vu Dang Dung who served as the first PR of Viet Nam to ASEAN from 2009 to April 2015.
