H.E. Mr. Tamerlan Karayev, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Azerbaijan to ASEAN has presented his Letter of Credence to H.E. Dr. Surin Pitsuwan, Secretary-General of ASEAN, at the ASEAN Secretariat today.

Dr. Surin Pitsuwan extended his warm congratulations to Ambassador Karayev upon his official assumption as the Ambassador of the Republic of Azerbaijan to ASEAN. In response, Ambassador Karayev underlined the commitment of the Government of Azerbaijan in pursuing its cooperation with ASEAN. He introduced some potential areas of cooperation with ASEAN, such as historical education, musical and cultural exchanges, oil explorations, agricultural exports especially fruits and vegetables, and also tourism. Ambassador Karayev, who is also designated as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Azerbaijan to Indonesia, Singapore, and forth coming to the Philippines and Timor-Leste, sought the possibility to invest in ASEAN countries.

Dr. Surin Pitsuwan believes that stability in the region will encourage more investments in the area and create opportunities for future cooperation between the two regions. The ASEAN Secretary-General stated that “we like to encourage the exchange and mutual awareness.” He also encouraged Azerbaijan to play a greater role in enhancing cooperation between ASEAN and Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) where Azerbaijan is among its 10 Member States. In addition, Ambassador Karayev conveyed a letter of invitation to Dr. Surin Pitsuwan regarding the proposed 12th ASEAN-ECO Ministerial Meeting which will be hosted by Azerbaijan on 15 October 2012. Dr. Surin informed Ambassador Karayev that the ASEAN Secretariat looks forward to working closely with him to further enhance the relationship between ASEAN and Azerbaijan and the rest of ECO Member States.
