Invitation to Public Lecture on “US-ASEAN Relations”
You are cordially invited to a public lecture on U.S.-ASEAN Relations by the Hon. William S. Cohen at the ASEAN Secretariat from 3.30 – 5.00 pm on Monday, 9 January 2012. The Hon. William S. Cohen is Co-Chair of the US-ASEAN Strategy Commission and former U.S. Secretary of Defence, Senator and Congressman.
ASEAN-US relations have expanded in the last few years. The highlights of this partnership include the adoption and implementation of the US-ASEAN Enhanced Partnership for Enduring Peace and Prosperity (2011 – 2015), the US’s accession to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC) in 2002, the convening of regular US-ASEAN Leaders meetings since 2009, the agreement to establish the ASEAN-US EPG, and the appointment of the first Ambassador to ASEAN. The United States also provides support to the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission for Human Rights (AICHR), and the Southeast Asia Nuclear Weapons Free Zone (SEANFWZ). The United States also holds consultations with ASEAN on transnational crime, trade, investment, energy, socio-cultural issues, climate change, disaster management, pandemics and health, amongst other issues.
The Hon. William S. Cohen, who has served with high distinction in various policy-making roles in the American government, will share his views on US-ASEAN Relations and the long term strategy of the United States in Asia.
