The APSMD were developed to support increased investment in minerals development, improved sustainability outcomes and greater public confidence in minerals development. They draw on experiences from and leading practices in major mining nations and the global minerals industry.

An ASEAN publication will be prepared to guide and inform all stakeholders – including governments, industry, non-government organisations and communities – on implementation of the APSMD. It will explain each principle in practical terms, provide examples of leading practices, and offer guidance on further implementation.

Just as all stakeholders play a role in the governance of minerals activities, they also have differentiated roles in ensuring the sustainability of minerals development. These are discussed towards the end of this publication.
