Guidelines and Minimum Standards for Maternal Nutrition

Author:ASEAN Secretariat

Abstract

A set of essential actions is recommended globally to address maternal malnutrition with provision of balanced energy and protein supplementation, calcium supplementation and multiple micronutrient supplementation targeted to women in low- and middle-income countries. The development of the ASEAN guidelines and minimum standards for maternal nutrition, as defined as nutrition for women of reproductive age (15-49 years) during pre-pregnancy, pregnancy and post-partum period, shall look into the triple burden of malnutrition in the ASEAN region and how sub-optimal nutrition for women of reproductive age is linked to this problem. The document aims to provide guidance/minimum standard on a maternal nutrition package for women of reproductive age, in collaboration with ASEAN member states and technical partners, based on best practices globally and in the region to ensure a common approach in the region, on the programming, operation, capacity development and management of interventions. This guideline outlines essential nutrition interventions among women reproductive age, including before pregnancy (adolescence), preconception, pregnancy, and lactation to improve maternal and infant health and optimal birth outcome as an effort to break intergenerational cycle of malnutrition. This is a guidance document, considered as a minimum standard, that shall present a common approach in ASEAN for the programming, and management of policies and practices for maternal nutrition. The ASEAN Member States and related stakeholders can use this guideline as a reference to improve country policy, program planning and intervention to prevent and overcome maternal nutrition for women of reproductive age. The reduction of maternal malnutrition can lead all ASEAN Member States to achieve nutrition related targets at national and global level.
