Politics and Government in Malaysia

Author:R.S. Milne and Diane K. Mauzy

Abstract

Politics and Government in Malaysia is concerned with the substantial political changes that took place in Malaysia after Independence in 1957 and especially during the last ten years. Among these are the May 1969 racial riots and the temporary suspension of parliamentary rule; the replacement of Tunku Abdul Rahman as Prime Minister by Tun Razak, and, on Tun Razak's death, the succession of Datuk Hussein Onn; developments in the party system, particularly the formation of the National Front; the adoption of neutrality in foreign policy; and Government's New Economic Policy.rnrnApart from written materials, published and unpublished, the book is based on over a hundred interviews - with politicians from every party, civil servants, academics, journalists, professional people and businessmen - as well as a number of less structured conversations, mostly in 1974 and 1975. These were important in enabling the authors to get the feel" of Malaysian politics
