PREFACE

The ASEAN Document Series of 1996 – 1997 is the compilation of ASEAN documents mainly declarations, protocol agreements, and joint press statements.

The period covered by this document series is highlighted by the First ASEAN Informal Summit in Jakarta, Indonesia, the Second ASEAN Informal Summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, events declaring the admission of Laos and Myanmar as new members of ASEAN. Also included are the landmark documents on the ASEAN cooperation with China, Japan and Republic of Korea towards the 21st Century.

It is hoped that our readers will find the ASEAN Document Series a useful and informative source of reference on the latest developments on ASEAN Affairs.
